DISKO

A staged photo in which the whole family forces a smile, in front of the Christmas tree or at graduation — we all have one. FROWST, by Polish photographer Joanna Piotrowska, is modelled on a family album, and an air of pretence in the moment the picture is taken pervades the entire book, drawing attention to the tension inherent in a family unit. A woman sitting on her father's lap, a mother lifting her adult son as if he were just a baby: these unsettling poses of reconciliation taken in sessions of Family Constellations, a type of therapy practice, reveal how easily it is to outgrow your family, and how difficult it can be to fit in.

Frowst is available from MACK Books.
