Same difference: a photography project reveals the hidden patterns in everyday life

St Petersburg-based photographer Alexey Bogolepov's Parallelism project started as a 365-day exercise, with the idea of taking one photo a day and observing the patterns that emerged. It didn't take long for Bogolepov to start spotting similarities in composition and colour scheme across his images. "These photos hint at the abundance of visual echoes that surround us," he says. "One only needs to tune into the right frequency." Bogolepov, who once did a stint as a photographer on Caribbean cruise ships, began Parallelism in December 2011. For the following 12 months, he took photographs in St Petersburg as well as Moscow, Belarus and Abkhazia. "At some point, most photographers ask themselves, why do I keep shooting the same stuff?" says Bogolepov. "I decided that the answer to that carries a positive set of implications: repetition always points to interesting internal traits, which says a lot about how you connect to your surroundings."
