To the outer limits: extraordinary journeys with performance artists

Last year photographer and fashion journalist Dmitry Shabalin, a staffer at Russian Numero, spent a month capturing three of Russia's most high-profile performance artists in action. Sasha Frolova, known in Moscow fashion circles as Latex Superwoman, was photographed on the rooftop of one of the capital’s high-rise buildings. Shalabin shot Roman Ermakov, an architect and creator of “living” sculptures, as he took his first flight in a small aircraft — still wearing his artistic attire. And he accompanied Andrey Bartenev, who has been staging art works for more than 20 years, on a journey into the the Russian woods and fields, together with a full team of green-clad performers. The results are beguiling.
