Dmitry Gutov retrospective opens at MMOMA

A retrospective of one of Russia’s most eminent visual artists, Dmitry Gutov, opens in Moscow on 24th May showcasing 25 years of artworks, some of which have never been exhibited before. No Surprises at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art spans a 25-year period starting from 1988 and includes paintings, photographs, installations and graphic art.

The exhibition, which focuses on photographs and video installations made by the artist after 1991, reveals the diversity of sources from which Gutov draws his inspiration, ranging from Joseph Beuys’s graphics and Rembrandt’s sketches to Chinese calligraphy and the graphic design of Soviet magazines from the Fifties and Sixties. The artworks are accompanied by texts from contemporary art critics, artists and curators.

Gutov’s work has been exhibited at a number of major contemporary art galleries around the world including the Guggenheim Museum and the Louvre. He has also participated in the 1995, 2007 and 2011 editions of the Venice Biennale, as well as other festivals in Istanbul, Valencia, São Paolo, Sydney and Shanghai.

The exhibition runs from 24 May until 30 June.
