Moscow museum showcases more than 100 years of packaging design

From contemporary egg cartons to Soviet-era matchboxes, a new exhibition at the Moscow Design Museum takes a look at centuries of packaging in Russia. Packaging Design: Made in Russia covers a range of artistic styles and graphic design including art nouveau, avant-garde, constructivism, mid-century modernism, Eighties’ eclecticism and contemporary trends.

The exibition includes never-before-seen objects such as ornamental perfume bottles, medical products, household items, textiles and toys from private collections, as well as striking examples of constructivist packaging and adverts by artist Alexander Rodchenko and poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Other gems include packaging for condensed milk, a chewing gum wrapper, a black caviar tin and the first Soviet beer can, which was manufactured especially for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

The exhibition runs until 25 June 2013.
