Blue teeth: explore digital artist Uno Moralez’s graphic novel in Moscow

Russian digital artist Uno Moralez’s solo exhibition Blue teeth opens on 31 March at Triumph Gallery in Moscow, based on his unpublished graphic novel of the same name.

Hailing from Russia’s Republic of Bashkortostan, Moralez takes the inspiration for his graphic novel from the “blue teeth” legend he heard while at pioneer camp — a girl attends a dance and is never seen again. The artist takes this legend and sets it against the backdrop of perestroika, skillfully bringing together his teenage days spent in 1980s Ufa (Bashkortostan’s capital) with elements of anime and manga.

“Moralez’s genius, and I don’t mind using that word in his case, evidences itself in how his work reads like a Serpentor-style amalgam created using the combined DNA of Suehiro Maruo, Nicholas Gurewitch, David Lynch, Andrei Rublev, and the evil videotape from The Ring,” writes Sean T. Collins for The Comics Journal.

Triumph Gallery has teamed up with Absolut Vodka to present Blue Teeth — try an Absolut Blue Teeth, a signature cocktail created for the exhibition.

Blue Teeth will run at Moscow’s Triumph Gallery in Moscow from 31 March — 16 April, with the opening party taking place on 30 March. Find out more here.
