Russian internet goes crazy as Tsar Nicholas II sculpture appears to weep

Russian social media has been awash with activity after a bust of Tsar Nicholas II allegedly shed tears, perfectly timed to mark the centenary of his abdication.

Natalya Poklonskaya, a deputy in Russia’s State Duma representing the annexed territory of Crimea, spoke of the tsar’s tears on Friday on the appropriately named television channel Tsargrad TV. Ms Poklonskaya claimed that she had been informed of the “miracle” by colleagues in the Crimean city of Simferopol, where the sculpture is located.

“It’s a miracle that no scientists, no one can explain,” she said. “And this is the 100th anniversary!”

Perhaps not taking the “miracle” entirely seriously, social media users responded with images of other sculptures depicting famous faces, who seem to have taken a leaf out of Nicholas II’s book — tears rolled down the cheeks of Lenin and Stalin, while the nose of Marshal Zhukov’s horse near Moscow’s Red Square also got in on the action.

Ms Poklonskaya is known for her veneration of the tsar — she has recently been involved in a movement to see the ban of Alexey Uchitel’s upcoming historical drama film Matilda, which centres on ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska and her relationship with Nicholas II.
