Garage Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art opens next week

2 March 2017

Moscow’s Garage Museum of Contemporary Art will open its first triennial dedicated to contemporary Russian art on 10 March, showcasing works by more than 60 artists from across the country created over the last five years.

The Triennial represents a huge survey of art practice from across Russia, put together by a curatorial team of six who have visited over 40 cities and towns throughout Russia’s vast territory and eleven time zones. Through work in collaboration with Garage’s regional network of art practitioners, the team identified seven “vectors” or tendencies crucial to understanding Russia’s art scene — these encompass such diverse themes as using art as activism and the inclination to develop complex mythological worlds within art.

The Triennial coincides with the centenary year of the Russian Revolution, an anniversary that has led Garage to look forward, as well as back. “Just as the Revolution encouraged Russia’s first avant-garde, Garage hopes to spur the next,” reads the press release.

The Garage Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art will run from from 10 March — 14 May 2017. Find out more, including the full list of participating artists, here.
