This Belarusian sports writer literally ate his words

17 February 2017

Belarusian sports editor Vyacheslav Fedorenkov may be more careful next time he makes a bet — his last wager saw him eating his own newspaper.

Mr Fedorenkov, who writes for popular national sports paper Pressball, found himself enjoying the unusual snack after he incorrectly predicted that local hockey team Dinamo Minsk would not make it to the play-offs in the international Kontinental Hockey League.

The editor stayed true to his promise to eat a copy of Pressball should his prediction be wrong, holding a very special press conference at Minsk Arena’s press centre yesterday. In front of a crowd of journalists Mr Fedorenkov attempted to wash down the newspaper with a can of soup and some fizzy drink, in the end managing to eat half of the pages.

“I would do anything for my favourite team. [...] I will be frank with you lads. [...] Don’t joke like this and don’t make such promises, because they are pretty difficult to deliver,” he said, offering a word of sage advice from the wrong side of an ill-placed bet.
