First Romanian producer to compete for foreign-language Oscar

25 January 2017

No New East film has made it through to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards this year, but Romanian producer Ada Solomon is still in the race for her role in Germany’s entry Toni Erdmann.

Solomon co-produced the film, which was directed by Maren Ade and shot almost exclusively in Romania, becoming the first Romanian producer to compete for the Foreign Language prize. Despite a long history of submitting films, Romania has yet to be nominated for an Oscar in this category.

Toni Erdmann has already gained considerable international acclaim, including winning the FIPRESCI Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. Joining Toni Erdmann on the list of nominees for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars this year include A Man Called Ove (Sweden) Land of Mine (Denmark) The Salesman (Iran) and Tanna (Australia) .

Last year’s Academy Awards saw the debut feature by Hungarian filmmaker László Nemes Son of Saul take home Best Foreign Language Film.
