90-year-old artist Geta Brătescu to represent Romania at Venice Biennale

With a career spanning over 50 years, 90-year-old visual artist Geta Brătescu is surely among the most experienced artists to represent Romania at the Venice Biennale.

Brătescu won the opportunity to represent Romania after the project Geta Brătescu — Apparitions (Geta Brătescu — Apariţii) gained the highest score in the second phase of the Culture Ministry’s selection process.

Known for her use of varied media — from textiles and sculpture to film, photography and drawing — Brătescu is no stranger to the Venice Biennale, having first taken part in a group exhibition there in 1960.

The acclaimed artist will not be going it alone in Venice, with her winning project’s team also including curator Magda Radu, Corina Bucea, Diana Ursan, Raymond Bobar, Dan Burzo, Frederic Eyl, Steffen Oestreich, and Marian Manten.

The upcoming 57th edition of the Venice Biennale exhibition, curated by Christine Macel, is taking place from 13 May — 26 November under the title Viva Arte Viva.
