The lure: Polish man-eating musical mermaids in US release

Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s 2015 rock musical-cum-thriller The Lure will be released in the USA on 1 February.

Set in 1980s Warsaw, The Lure follows two young mermaids — Golden and Silver — as they leave the ocean to join a band, performing at one of the city’s nightclubs. Their exploration of rock and sexuality sees Silver fall in love with guitarist Mietek, while Golden develops a taste for human flesh.

Smoczyńska has described the film as a “coming-of-age story” that echoes her own youth. In an interview with Cineuropa, she explained that the mermaids serve as a symbol for “a girl who is growing and developing, a chrysalis waiting to become a woman”.
