Forthcoming Moscow metro station to feature sunny optical illusion

8 December 2016

Moscow’s upcoming Solntsevo metro station, currently under construction, will bring a little sunshine to the daily commute with solar-themed optical illusion.

The architects behind the design, Moscow-based studio Nefa Architects, plan to create the illusion of a solar orb inside the station. In addition, natural sunlight will feature heavily, with holes in the ceiling of the lobby and the station itself letting in light.

Even the name Solntsevo has a sunny feel — set in the eponymous Solntsevo district, the name Solntsevo finds its root in the Russian word for sun.

The new station forms part of a wide-reaching expansion of the Moscow metro, the aim of which is to ensure that 93% of Moscow inhabitants live within walking distance of a metro station. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2020.
