Appropriating appropriation: Algerian/Bulgarian artist Meryem Meg in London exhibition

15 November 2016

Check out Algerian/Bulgarian artist Meryem Meg‘s new London exhibition, Appropriating Appropriation.

Taking place at AKQA in Farringdon, the exhibition showcases 12 paintings that draw upon Meg’s African and European roots, responding to cultural appropriation and the commodification of “tribal patterns” through the reclaiming of a visual heritage.

Meg’s work often reflects on themes such as fertility and the cycles that exist within nature, which she sets against an urban backdrop. Her paintings are a personal and contemporary examination of indigenous methods of mark making from the perspective of a member of the diaspora.

Appropriating Appropriation will run at AKQA until 9 December 2016. You can find more information here.
