Croatian software crucial in today’s US presidential election

Today’s the day — after what seems like a lifetime of campaigning, US voters will finally be going to the polls to decide their next president. But did you know that Croatian software will be playing an important role in the process?

BlinkID, a programme developed by Zagreb-based firm MicroBlink, makes it easy to scan ID documents with barcodes or Optical Character Recognition, such as passports, driving licences and ID cards. The programme uses advanced neural networks, computer systems modelled on the human brain and nervous system, to provide accurate text recognition using a smartphone camera.

One of the company’s founders, Izet Ždralović, confirmed to Croatian newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija that the software has already been used in the voting registration process in the run-up to the election, and will be used to identify voters in the election itself.
