Pussy Riot top Spotify viral chart

4 November 2016

A song by Russian punk band Pussy Riot has topped music service Spotify’s Viral 50 chart, both globally and in the US.

Make America Great Again plays on some of US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s most infamous and explosive statements, and borrows his campaign slogan. The video is directed by Jonas Åkerlund, known for his work on Madonna’s Ray of Light, as well as his work with Beyonce, Britney Spears and Frank Ocean.

The track’s success marks the first time a Russian artist has come top of the chart, a moment the band celebrated with a jubilant tweet: “Vagina gonna top the charts,” read a post on Pussy Riot’s official Twitter account.

Last week the band released two other music videos. Straight Outta Vagina also refers to Trump, in a kind of response to the presidential candidate’s statement about using his fame to “get women”, while Organs takes on Russian politics.

Pussy Riot is perhaps most famous for their performance at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012, after which three members were convicted of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”.
