New Polish brand brings communist-era chair back to life

18 October 2016

New Łódź-based brand 366 Concept has given a once-ubiquitous Polish-designed chair a new lease of life.

The company reissued the 366 easy chair – which was designed by Józef Chierowski in 1962 and was for some time a staple of Polish living rooms – two years ago, and showcased it at this year’s London Design Festival trade fair.

366 Concept’s founders, Maciej Cypryk and Agata Górka, hope to bring the “abandoned” icon to a larger audience. They have particular hopes for success in western Europe, especially in cities such as London or Paris where many people might be unable to have a sofa owing to lack of space. The small size of the chair (72cm high and 62cm wide) is one of its key features.

“This was not caused by design, it was caused by markets,” Cypryk explains. “Poland was a poor country with small flats and couldn’t afford the production of furniture on a big scale. So they came up with the idea of this small chair that used as little material as possible.”
