Bulgaria, Lithuania and Serbia choose their films for the Oscars

Bulgaria, Lithuania and Serbia have entered the race for the 89th Academy Awards, selecting their submissions for the foreign-language film category.

The Bulgarian National Film Centre has chosen high school comedy-drama Losers by Ivaylo Hristov, which won the the main award at the Moscow International Film Festival last year.

Lithuania’s submission, Seneca’s Day by Kristijonas Vildžiūnas, also takes us back to teenage days. Produced together with Latvia and Estonia, Seneca’s Day moves from young friends who decide to “live each day as if it were your last” in the last days of Soviet rule in 1989, to 25 years later, when one friend delves into memories.

Serbia-Croatia co-production Train Driver’s Diary will be Serbia’s entry, in which director Miloš Radović follows the story of a train driver who is famous for the wrong reasons – 28 people were accidentally killed during his career. Ilja, who is close to retirement, must now prepare his adopted son, Sima, to follow in his footsteps.
