If you’re in London this week, head to Cabaret Kultura — three experimental evening performances by V-A-C-Foundation in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery.

Cabaret Kultura is the first edition of V-A-C-Live, the new performance-led strand of Moscow’s V-A-C Foundation, which is dedicated to the development of Russian contemporary art.

Each of the artists chosen by V-A-C have drawn inspiration from early 20th century Russian avant-garde theatre and cabaret, while Whitechapel Gallery’s Gallery 2 will be transformed into an awe-inspiring set using locally-sourced materials by Russian artist Sergey Sapozhnikov.

The first performance will see an immersive performance by St Petersburg-based collective AKHE, while spectators should be prepared for some audience participation at the performance of Russian artist Evgeny Antufiev’s dark lottery game Dead Nation: Bingo Version on the second evening. The final show will feature Alexander Selivanov and Alexander Kislov collaborating with Sergey Sapozhnikov to create a choreographed performance and an experimental soundscape. Up-and-coming artists Alexandra Galkina, Alevtina Kakhidze and Sasha Pirogova are also set to perform throughout the three evenings.

If you can’t make it to the evening performances, archival images of avant-garde set design, costumes and cabaret will be available to view in Gallery 2 during the day.

Cabaret Kultura will run at London’s Whitechapel Gallery from 15 – 17 September. More information can be found here.
