The central Latvian town of Cēsis has set up a new magazine – Creative Cēsis – as part of its attempt to become known as Latvia’s creative capital.

Although Cēsis is a relatively small town, with a population of 15,000, according to mayor Janis Rozenbergs and local architect Toms Kokins the town is seeing increasingly large numbers of people – and especially young people – moving from Riga and other areas.

Creative Cēsis sets out the town’s credentials as a magnet for young creatives, artists, craftspeople and innovative businesses, who have been arriving in town in droves.

The 56-page bilingual magazine was launched on Friday, profiling the creative industries already present.

Surrounded by the Gauja National Park, Cēsis and the district around it are already home to numerous businesses of international appeal, including Write It Notebooks, Kampenuss Furniture and tools made at the Autine forge.

The creator of the magazine is Evelīna Ozola, editor of FOLD, a magazine focusing on design and creative industries in Latvia.
