Croatian conceptual artist Mladen Stilinović dies

Mladen Stilinović, one of Croatia’s most prominent contemporary artists, died in Pula last night.

According to reports, Stilinović died after a serious illness.

He was one of the founders of the so-called “New Art Practice” in Croatia and a member of the Group of Six Artists (Grupa šestorice autora) together with Vladimir Martek, Boris Demur, Željko Jerman, Sven Stilinović and Fedomir Vučemilović. The group criticised the restrictions set by art institutions and introduced the practice of exhibiting art in the open air, using objects such as sunloungers, along with outdoor projections.

Exhibited in some of the world’s most prestigious galleries and museums, Stilinović‘s work encompasses collage, photography, painting, installation and film.

He perhaps most famous for his Exploitation of the Dead series (1984–1990) which has been exhibited at many shows, including documenta in Kassel (2007)
