See this camera lens memorial to a photojournalist killed in the Yugoslav Wars

A sculpture of a giant broken camera lens sits atop Čukur hill in Banovina, Croatia, in honour of photojournalist Gordan Lederer, who was killed during the Yugoslav Wars.

The memorial, designed by Zagreb-based architects NFO, stands on the hill where the photographer was shot by a sniper in 1991 while covering the Croatian War of Independence for Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT).

While the sculpture itself is made up of a giant stainless steel ring that surrounds a circular panel of cracked and broken glass, a curving pathway made up of concrete slabs set within black steel frames leads up to the memorial. The slabs, akin to film frames, are designed to represent a year of Lederer’s life.

“The glass membrane, pierced with a shot from a sniper, stops visitors’ glance for a moment and confronts them with the reality of events on that location,” said NFO, who worked with sculptor Petar Barišić on the project, “At the same time, the perfect stainless steel circle suggests the continuity of life, framing a view of the same landscape filmed 24 years ago at the same place.”

Although dedicated to Lederer, the memorial also commemorates the other cameramen and photographers killed during the conflict.
