Powerful Serbian documentary thriller scoops grand jury award at London’s Open City Docs Fest

Serbian director Ongjen Glavonić‘s Depth Two has won the grand jury award at London’s Open City Documentary Festival.

A documentary thriller centering on an incident in which a truck containing 53 dead bodies plunged into the Danube, Depth Two takes viewers back to 1999 to examine, using spoken testimonies and powerful images, the atrocities of the Milošević regime.

“It’s hard to describe the experience of watching this film — at one level it’s a forensic telling of a dreadful story that gradually reveals its secrets, while simultaneously creating a space for reflecting on universal themes of violence and complicity,” said jury chair Penny Woolcock of the Serbian-French co-production.

“My idea with this film was to uncover and give a voice to this case and the stories behind it which for years have been silenced,” Glavonić stated.

The Open City Documentary Festival took place from 21 – 26 June at cinemas around London. Other new east films screened included Mallory (2015) by Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková and Georgian-German co-production The Dazzling Light of Sunset (2016, dir. Salome Jashi).
