First cinema museum to open in Estonia

Estonia’s first cinema museum is set to open, as part of the renovation of Tallinn’s Marienberg Castle complex.

The museum, which is expected to open in two years, will include a 210-seater screening room, complete with its own red carpet leading into the cinema.

“A permanent exhibition on Estonian and world cinema, as well as about the process of creating a movie, will be on at the museum. Visitors will be able to see the work that goes on behind the scenes and try this for themselves,” said the director of the Estonian History Museum, Sirje Karis, adding that workshops for children will be offered.

The cinema museum forms part of the redevelopment of Marienberg, which includes the creation of a modern history centre, exhibition halls, a park, playground and cafes, as well as the cinema museum. At a price of more than €8 million (approx. US$8.8 million), the redevelopment is one of the most significant investments in Estonian culture to date.

The opening of the renovated Marienberg centre is planned for 2018, when Estonia will hold the EU presidency.
