Competition-winning designs for two new Moscow Metro stations revealed

The winners of the international competition to design two new Moscow Metro stations have been revealed.

Russian studios Timur Bashkayev Architectural Bureau and BuroMoscow won the competition to design the Nizhniye Mnevniki and Terekhovo stations in northwest Moscow. The competition was organised by architecture and urban planning consultants Strelka KB, on the request of Mosinzhproekt, the engineering company undertaking the construction of all the new metro stations in the upcoming metro expansion.

Timur Bashkayev Architectural Bureau submitted the winning design for Nizhniye Mnevniki station. Their plans involve using colour — particularly red — to highlight structural elements within the station, and leaving many surfaces bare, revealing materials such as raw concrete.

“We were working on visual combination, and accentuation of pure form and space,” said the design team in their description.

In contrast, BuroMoscow’s proposal for Terekhovo station is more minimal in its aesthetic, emphasising light and shadow. The entrance pavilions feature fluted walls, while the ticket area has mirrored panels and large circular lighting fixtures. Columns on the platforms are set to be decorated with illuminated silhouettes. The designers have stated that the space will be “illuminated with reflected light”.

“The winning projects for Nizhniye Mnevniki and Terekhovo stations were chosen for their unique and original design and perfect vision delivery in accordance with the highest standards of contemporary architecture,” said Moscow deputy mayor for urban development and construction, Marat Khusnullin.

The two stations form part of a wide-reaching expansion of the Moscow Metro. Construction of a new circle line, called the The Third Interchange Circuit, began in 2011. The aim of the expansion is to ensure that 93% of Moscow inhabitants live within walking distance of a Metro station.

The competition attracted 121 entries from 16 countries. The designs can be viewed on the competition website.
