National Geographic Traveler Magazine names Azerbaijan “Discovery of the Year”

Azerbaijan has been named “Discovery of the Year” in the National Geographic Traveler Magazine’s “Best Tourism Destinations 2015” list.
The award was presented to the Azerbaijani ambassador to Russia, Polad Bulbuloglu, last night in Moscow.
“Picturesque landscapes, hospitable people, delicious cuisine, and the pearly beaches of Absheron turn Azerbaijan into an attractive destination for tourists,” the ambassador said, drawing attention also to the country’s ski resorts and suitability for winter holidays.
240,000 people voted across 18 categories in this year’s National Geographic Traveler Awards between 29 June 29 and 31 October.
Tourism in Azerbaijan has grown substantially, with over 2 million tourists visiting the country last year, a more than 100% increase since 2006.
