Travel guide giant Lonely Planet has named Transylvania the top recommended region in its “Best of 2016” roundup.

Transylvania, a region in central Romania, is known for its mountains, castles and medieval towns, as well as its association with the Dracula legend.

Transylvania was not the only new east destination to be picked out by Lonely Planet. The coastal town of Kotor in Montenegro was named “Best City” for 2016 while Estonia was dubbed “Best Value”, with its capital Tallinn mentioned as “one of Europe’s most captivating cities“.

The “Best of 2016” collection “highlights not the places travelers are headed to next year, but the places our team determined they should visit,” said Tom Hall, Lonely Planet’s editorial director.
