Russian photographer Nikolai Bakharev has been nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize for his black and white series Relationship, marking the first time a Russian national has been nominated for the award. Bakharev’s series was shot in the 1980s at a time when photographs containing nudity were prohibited, and features a number of family and group shots many of which were arranged by Bakharev himself.

“From my point of view, I expose the nature which people do not want to admit to, if it does not fit their notions of themselves,” Bakharev said. Bakharev’s works are currently features in the Deutsche Börse exhibition currently at The Photographer’s Gallery.

Other shortlisted artists include Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Viviane Sassen (Netherlands) and Mikhael Subotzky (1981).

The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize was established by The Photographer’s Gallery in 1996, and awards the winning photographer with a prize of £30,000 ($44,790). This year’s winner will be announced at an award ceremony held at The Photographers’ Gallery in London on 28 May.
