Exhibition of wartime covers from satirical magazine Krokodil opens at Moscow’s Winzavod

An exhibition of cover pages and illustrations from popular Soviet satirical magazine Krokodil has opened at Moscow’s Winzavod Centre for Contemporary Art, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Great Patriotic War (Second World War). Victory Through the Eyes of Krokodil features work published between 1941 and 1945 from prominent Soviet artists including cartoonist trio The Kukryniksy and Boris Yefimov.

Victory Through the Eyes of Krokodil charts the entire course of the war, and is divided into seven themes: Reports from the front, Soldier’s truth, Partisans and life, Beat the Fascists!, Just Hitler, Krokodil in war and Our victory.

The exhibition and the accompanying 160-page album of Krokodil‘s most memorable war illustrations, are part of а bigger project, a 12-book series entitled History Through the Eyes of Krokodil, which looks back at the 20th century through the magazine’s archive of satirical illustrations from 1922-1992.

The exhibition runs until 17 May.
