Moscow’s Gogol Theatre re-opened on Friday under new leadership and a new name, The Gogol Centre. Kirill Serebrennikov, one of Russia’s most acclaimed young directors, took over as artistic director of the ailing theatre last August with plans to transform the space into a multi-art space hosting music, film and dance. The theatre re-opened with 00.00, a contemporary dance performance composed especially for the occasion, which according to Serebrennikov signified the institution’s rebirth. The revamped space now includes a bookshop and cafe, and will play host to a series of educational events including lectures and masterclasses called Gogol Plus. The theatre originally opened in 1925 as a venue for railway workers from the nearby Kuskaya Station.
