A new philharmonic hall in Poland’s north-western coastal city of Szczecin has been shortlisted for the Designs of the Year awards, an annual prize organised by London’s Design Museum. The building, designed by Spanish studio Barozzi Veiga, features a translucent ribbed-glass facade and a spiky roof, and was erected on the site of the Konzerthaus, a concert hall destroyed during the Second World War. At night, lights shining from inside give the building a white glow.

The symphony hall can hold up to 1,000 spectators, with an additional hall for chamber music, a multifunctional space for exhibitions and conferences, and a wide foyer for events.

The 76 projects nominated for the awards belong to one of six categories: architecture, digital, fashion, product, graphics and transport. The awards were established to honour work “that promotes or delivers change, enables access, extends design practice or captures the spirit of the year”, and is now in its eighth year.

Other nominees for the architecture category include Sancaklar Mosque in Turkey, Water bank Campus at Endana Secondary School in Kenya and the UC Innovation Centre in Chile.
