First all-Russian “anti-sanction” food store to open

Russia’s first “anti-sanction” food shop will soon open in the city of Ulyanovsk, 900km east of Moscow, as part of wider efforts to counter the growing concern over the future of the food industry following the ban on imported produce.

Selling only Russian produce, the shelves will be stocked with foodstuffs such as Crimean wine and Volga fish when the shop opens in two weeks. The shop was opened on the order of Ulyanovsk’s regional governor with a further 15 to 20 similar businesses set to follow shortly in the region.

Twitter users in the region have suggested possible names for the new stores such as “Without Obama”, “Strong Nation” and “Polite Chickens”, a reference to the popular nickname “Polite People” given to the Russian soldiers alleged to have been involved in the annexation of Crimea in March this year.

Last week, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced a year-long ban on fruit, fish, meat, vegetables and dairy imports from the EU, US, Australia, Canada and Norway in response to sanctions against Russia over Ukraine.
