Pavel Pepperstein tackles politics in new Moscow exhibition

Almost five years after his last exhibition in Russia, artist Pavel Pepperstein’s work has gone on show at the Regina Gallery in Moscow. According to a statement from the gallery, Holy Politics features ten paintings and several watercolours which depict Pepperstein’s almost childlike view of contemporary politics. Through a cast of characters, including cartoons, graphic images and bright colours, the artworks consider issues related to justice, war and the crises, financial and otherwise, currently engulfing Europe.

The slogans emblazoned on the works — “The political dimension is part of the aesthetic space”, “In our time no political solution is possible without extraterrestrial control” and others — are applicable in a global context. Moscow-born Pepperstein has participated in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions around the world including at the Louvre in Paris as well as festivals such as the Venice Biennale. His work spans various genres including writing and rap.
