The Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art has become a key fixture in the calendar of creative Russia. Based in the city of Yekaterinburg but dedicated to exploring the artistic and industrial heritage of the entire Sverdlovsk region, the Biennial is seen by many as a more avant-garde and politically engaged alternative to its Moscow counterpart. The Biennial is the project of Alisa Prudnikova, an influential curator and director of the Yekaterinburg Centre of Contemporary Arts, who says that “the last Biennial’s 100,000 attendance marks a major breakthrough that the city has made on the international arts scene.”
