In her project True Self Natalie Maximova explores the topic of gender identity, troubled, ignored and distorted and therefore even more relevant in contemporary Russian society. Maximova photographed transgender people ranging in age from their early 20s to mid 40s. By taking portraits of them she provides them with the possibility of asserting their own identity. The result is intimate and incredibly sincere.
