Excerpt from Son of Saul (2015)

Laszlo Nemes

With his debut feature Son of Saul winning the Grand Prix in the main Cannes competition, this year is a leap into the spotlight for Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes. He took the ambitious risk of attempting a whole new language to portray the Holocaust, shaking up audiences. We follow close in with a Jewish sonderkommando crematorium worker over two days as he navigates a sensory tumult of camp horrors while trying to bury a body he believes to be that of his son. The former assistant director to Bela Tarr gives us a charcoal-textured inferno in which panicked numbness is the modus operandi of survival and trauma is a state of siege over humanity’s last vestiges.
